About our Pigs

At Wallis Farm Pigs & Poultry we breed Miniature pigs which are essentially a Kune Kune cross. They are very docile, loveable animals with huge personalities and make for excellent pets.

All our stock is fit and healthy and the parents are always available for you to meet.

All our piglets will have been weaned on to pellet food for at least two weeks before leaving us. They will have also been treated against worms, mites and mange. Our male piglets are also castrated. We do this when they are very young as this is the least traumatic time to do it.

Two's Company

A pair of pigs will make for much happier pets. Pigs are herd animals and do not do well in a solitary environment. We would therefore recommend having at least two pigs unless you have pigs already.

Where should I keep my pigs

Your pigs should be kept in a fenced off grassed enclosure. You'll need to make sure it is pig proof. If they can manage to squeeze themselves through a gap to get to something interesting they will, believe me! Decorating the area with a few logs is a good idea as it gives the pigs something to munch on and to scratch up against.

Accommodation

They will need housing of some description filled with plenty of straw. An insulated lined wooden shed makes ideal housing.

Pigs are unable to control their own body temperature. This is something you should bear in mind especially during the coldest and hottest times of the year. We provide our pig housing with infrared heat lamps during the colder months of the year to keep them cosy. During the summer we make sure they have shelter from the sun as they can suffer with sunburn and heatstroke just like us!

Food and Water

We feed our pigs Sow & Weaner Pellets from Dodson & Horrell. You will be provided with a bag of these pellets when you take your pig home. Any good quality brand of sow and weaner pellets or pot belled pig food is fine for the pigs but you will need to gradually mix it into their original food so they can get used to it.

Our pigs also love fruit and are given apples and bananas on a daily basis. Feeding your piglets grapes is a great way to get them to approach you and bond with them when you get them home.

Your pigs mustn't be fed scrapes from your kitchen as it is illegal. (See the Defra Guidance PDF).

Water is vital and pigs drink a great deal of it. We use automatic drinkers but if you are unable to run water to their enclosure then drinking troughs work just as well.

Rules & Regs

You are required by law to have a County Parish Holding (CPH) number before you can keep pigs. It is needed in case of a disease outbreak so the authorities can track who has pigs and where.

To obtain one you'll need to contact the Rural Payments Agency (RPA). They will then send you all the necessary paperwork. They can be contacted on 0845 6037777.

The last thing you'll need to do, when you get your pigs home, is to inform your local Animal Health Department so they can issue you with your own herd number.
